1.The sea turtle spesies :

For out of the world’s seven sea turtle spesies frequently visit sukamade to lay their eggs. The most common visitor is the Green turtle,but you can also occasionally spot :

  • Hawksbill Turtle
  • Olive Ridley Turtle
  • Leatherback Turtle (The largest of all sea turtles)

2.The conservation efforts :

Managed by the national park authorities,the conservation program at sukamade is highly active and organized.

  • Egg protection : every night park ranger patrol the beach. Once a turtle finishes laying her eggs,ranger carefully collect them and move them to a secure,fenced hatchery to protect them from natural predator (like wild boars,birds,and monitors).
  • Semi natural hatchery : the eggs are buried in the sand inside a protected facility until they hatch (usually taking 45 to 60 days).
  • Baby turtle release : once the eggs hatch,the tiny baby turtles (tukik) are gathered,and visitors are often invited to help release them back into ocean,giving them a saver head start in life.

3. The Visitor Experience :

Visiting sukamade is an adventure meant for true nature lovers. Because it is a strict conservation zone,the experience is highly regulated to minimize human impact :

  • Night Safaris : The main attraction happens at night. Guided by rangers and using minimal light (so as not to scare the turtles),visitors walk silently along the beach to witness a giant mother turtle laboriously digging a nest and laying up to 100 eggs.
  • The Journey : Reaching sukamade is an adventure. It requires a rough,multi hour drive in a 4×4 off-road vehicle,crossing rivers and driving through deep jungle and cacao/rubber plantations.
